Glossary

This web site contains references to computer terminology and as such is different to the language of normal conversation.

301 redirects - Tells the search engines and links to old pages in your site that the page has changed it's name or moved to a new location. Redirecting individual pages will ensure search engines update their old links and users don't get Error 404 page not found. This also transferrers the existing Search Engine Rank from the old page over to the new page so you don't lose those hard earns page ranks.

Accessibility - Ensuring web sites meet the accessibility guidelines as set out by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the governing body for web standards. http://www.w3c.org.

Analytics -Analytics measure a visitor's journey on your website. Web analytics measures the performance of your website in a commercial context. This data is typically compared against key performance indicators for performance, and used to improve a web site or marketing campaign's audience response.

Banner Ads - A web banner or banner ad is a form of advertising on your website.

Blog / Journal - A blog (a contraction of the term "web log") is the ability to display web pages for articles, personal reflection or any topic at all and the user reading the blog has the ability to comment on the topic.

Call to action - Something that will trigger an action from a user. The stronger the better. A strong call to action will get your users clicking.

Chat - Instant messaging or IM is a form of real-time communication between two or more people based on typed text. The text is conveyed via computers connected over a network such as the Internet.

CMS Website - Is a 'Web Content Management' (WCM) system is a CMS designed to simplify the publication of Web content to Web sites, in particular, allowing content creators to submit content without requiring technical knowledge of HTML or the uploading of files.

Configure - Select features and functionality unique to your site.

CRM - Customer Relationship Management is a way of collecting and tracking customer information, what they have purchased or newsletters they have received and opened.

Cross browser - Making sure a web site works and looks good across all browsers (eg. Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, Netscape Mozilla etc).

Customise - Create a look and feel unique to your site.

E-commerce - The ability to sell products, events or services via your website.

End to end - From concept to delivery.

Event Bookings
- Having the ability to book events or services via the website, these bookings can tie in with e-commerce and the user can pay via your website.

Forum - An Internet forum, or message board, is an online discussion site. It originated as the modern equivalent of a traditional bulletin board. Users can create topics to discuss and other members can give their advice and opinion, this is a great way to create a community of like minded people wanting to discuss issues and assist each other.

Hits - A term used to describe the volume of traffic a web site is receiving. Specifically, a 'hit' means a single request from a web browser for a single item from a web page.

Images - Resizing and retouching images can take about 10 - 15 mins per image depending on the amount of work involved.

Login - A user name and password.

Member Area - The ability to make certain pages seen by only a selected group of people. This is perfect if you have different pricing for Wholesalers and Retail customers or you need an area on your website that only your staff can access.

Member or registered user - These people have registered with the site and have a
profile on at least one site.

Newsletter - The ability to collect subscribers and send out Newsletters to your customers via your website

Password - Unique code that the user creates to gain access to the site.

Reverse engineer - Analysing code not familiar to the developer to discover how it works and interacts with other software.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) - Search Engine Marketing. Paid advertising on the Internet, such as banner ads, paid links in search engines etc.

SEO Website - Search Engine Optimisation is placing words in your website using the words your customers would use to search for your business if they did not know the name of it. Common word placement would be in Meta Data, Title of the page, Alternative text for images, page names, image names, link text to name a few.

Scalable - Able to grow and expand without much extra development.

Static Website - These are hard coded stand alone pages that have no functionality and just display their content like brochures. Can only be changed by someone who has the technical knowledge of HTML.

User or Unregistered users - This is a visitor to a site who has not registered and is therefore not a member.

User name - Unique name that the user creates to identify themselves online.

Visits - Visits usually break down into the number of pages requested per visit per unique user. That way you know who visits your site, how often they come and how long they stay.

W3C Validation - Validation is one of the simplest ways to check whether a page is built in accordance with Web standards, and provides one of the most reliable guarantee that future Web Browser will handle it as designed, just like our human visitors need clear, easy-to-understand content and navigation on your pages; search engine robots need that same kind of clarity in order to index the site easily.
